Quirky Alone

Quirky Alone is a website in the US - it's become so famous now that they have books and merchandise and even weekend camps. It's kind of a call to arms for all single people, all a bit American and icky but I do like their qualifications for being a quirkyalone:

A person who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to being in a relationship) and generally prefers to be alone rather than dating for the sake of being in a couple.

I also like the fact that you can be quirky together if you are in a couple but not a total twat about it. Top sleb example are the wonderful Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. And if you like to put it about a bit in a noncommittal way, you can be a quirkyslut!

They also make the point that virtually all popular culture is focussed on the happy ending, (inevitably translated as guy gets girl). I'll have to admit that I don't exactly feel oppressed by the slew of rom-coms that dominate the multiplexes every week, or the girl-meets-boy who treats her bad, then finally falls for the sweet guy who's been under her nose all along brand of chick-lit. But I'd never really thought about this side of things before. Strong, likeable single role models just didn't exist until Sex and the City (and they went and fucked it all up by pairing up in the last series). Oh, apart from the very fabulous Elaine from Seinfeld.

The main problem I have with the whole set-up is the name - quirky is a little bit to close to weird, and alone, well you might as well just go ahead and say lonely. But until I can think of anything better.....
